Oman: Death Toll From Flash Floods Reaches 17

At least 12 people died on Sunday after their vehicles were swept away by floodwaters

Nine students, two Omanis, and an expatriate were among the dead

At least 17 people have died in flash floods triggered by heavy rain across Oman since Sunday, the country's National Committee for Emergency Management (NCEM) reports. Among the dead were nine students, two Omanis, and an expatriate.

The heavy rain has caused flash flooding in Oman on the eastern edge of the Arabian Peninsula. Aerial rescues have saved at least 75 people, some who were swept up and carried away by flash floods. Police and soldiers are being deployed to the country's hardest hit areas to help with rescue and recovery efforts.

The heavy rain is expected to continue for the next few days, and the NCEM has warned people to stay away from flooded areas.
